It was a shock when I got the mail mentioning the internet restriction in our campus. From 26th january onwards we will not have internet or even intranet access from 11:00 PM night to 12:30 PM day.
Today we were talking to a professor and he said that there are two main reason behind this step, although I think both are pointless.
- Depression among students is increasing due to LAN games.
- Students are not attending lectures due to LAN games and other internet activity.
Depression
They say that main reason of depression and lonliness is these games. (I dont know their basis of thinking this). As for me is concerned, I got depressed just after hearing this news only. There are hell lot of people over here, whose lifeline is inernet. And please dont take it in a negative sense. We use internet fro study also. All I learnt about computers and new technology is not in the boring classrooms but on the internet.
General timing of interaction in IITB is evening. But, after implementation of this new ban we will loose this time also. We have lab till 5-5:30 and after 11:00 all internet access will be banned. So, What will be my priority in evening? Meeting with people or working on internet? Thus, interaction will decrease tremendously among students. And hence; lonliness, depression and propbabilty of suicide will increase.
So, this solution of stated problem is not solving it but magnifying it. And I don't understand why are they doing this. Their basis of thinking is completly imaginary. They didnt do any ground work before setting up their prejudices about it. They are saying that they did a survey in sep last year. What a crap..? Not a single friend of mine is aware of it. And please note...we are students. So, whose opinion did you aks for?
Instead of increasing participation of student in co-curricular activities they banned all the general championships. So, if they really want to increase interaction; they should try to involve students in other activities too.
Attendence
The 2nd reason was attendence. What the hell? There is already 80% manadatory attendance rule here. How banning internet will ensure attendence. People can play single player game. And how many gamers are there? 10%? 20%? They are punishing everyone for that.
There are lakhs of people dying coz of vehicle accident. So, should we ban vehicle in India...? (It's already banned in IIT Bombay though). Instead of curing a disease, should we killl the person instead?
We will face lot of practical problems due to this ridiculous decision. They didnt ask us about our actual problems and they say this is for betterment.
Reason for lack of attendence is entirely differnet. Which includes: outdated course strusture, 200%-errored labs, non-challenging assignmnets and sometimes professors incapable of conveying the subject topics. But, they dont want to agree about thier faults. So...its all fault of internet.
Technology is taboo in the best technological institute in India. God bless us.
